Passing out Creole Bibles
Dear Water4Haiti Friends,
I many times start out a letter with a scripture verse which would apply to Haiti such as Heb. 6:36 where Jesus says, “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat what shall we drink, what shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his moral law and all these things will be given to you as well”. The other night I was laying in bed and was thinking about all of the times I have shared with you about my concern and disgust of not being able to ship the container full of water pump supplies, waiting after nearly 3 years. I thought, “You selfish fool!” Here you are worried about sending a box of supplies and 1.3 million people of Haiti are living without homes, worried about surviving with no food, good water and even the possibility of being one of the 22,000 shot and killed the past 3 years and living in constant fear for your family. Unimaginable for us with having all of these “luxuries” to a Haitian that we just take for granted. Dr. Without Boarders has just closed the last of its clinics and hospitals after years of staying under fire.

Another scripture I have shared is John 14:27, where Jesus tells his disciples “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. Not as the world gives… do not be afraid, I am with you”. All but one of the disciples died by horrible deaths as martyrs. These passages are so easy for us to read when we have plenty of food, a comfortable home, clothes, for each season and no fear of a criminal death. How do we say this to Haitian’s who many are homeless, shirtless, hungry and fearful of their lives? And I am worried about a container of pumps and pipe?
There is absolutely nothing we can do to relieve them of all of their terrible physical and mental anguish, is but to pray and trust in the Lord. And that seems so inadequate when we are used to solving many of our own problems. Even a strong “Believer” in Haiti I am sure at times questions, “Lord where are you, you know my sorrow”. King David in Psalms questioned at times where His God was. God did not give Job a reason as to his terrible suffering. Even we as “Believers”, with all of our earthly luxuries and benefits from medical care to wide screen TVs, become discouraged and wonder sometimes where the Lord is in a troubling time of our lives.
This paragraph has just been inserted as the original letter was to be sent today. But I called the printer early and said, “Hold the press, new information”. Very early this morning Roberto called and said that on Sat. 700 gang members came into our town and within a 2 block 200 had been killed. The gangs are fighting each other for the control of land. The story is that as the gangs move north they want to make Montrouis a headquarters. They are taking over schools and churches for sleeping and robbing people for food. We are locking the compound and drove several vehicles up into a friendly mountain village. This is all I know for now, Oct 17. The gangs are also heading to St. Marc 20 mi. north for another stronghold. We have an orphanage right beside us whose director lives in Mich. and Roberto is trying to help get those children to safety also. The only real safe place is 96 mi north to Cap Haitian. Our army is there with planes and helicopters. Even if he can get a truck or bus to take he and his family and orphanage it will be a very tough trip, plus having to worry about being robbed by gang road blocks.

God allows evil to exist for His own glory, though He is not its author-Satan is. Therefore, the only solution to evil is the gospel of Jesus Christ. This brings us back to our inability to do anything but PRAY for this fallen world and especially Haiti. I had a mission driller friend write and tell me he thought, of those he knew, that Water4Haiti’s compound was the only one he knew of that had no damage in some way. His compound was 20 mi. south of ours and the gangs took everything. They even dismantled the steel framed buildings and took the tin roof, sides and the steel frame and drove his large army truck right through the concrete wall. How can one say we have been so blessed, as there are just as many Godly organizations but were totally destroyed. Your prayers and the Lord’s arms around the compound have to be the only reason as we are much closer to the road than he was.

Yes, this letter is much different than any I have ever shared. Always before it was what we had been doing, drilling wells, repairing pumps and then the gangs and container lately were always mentioned. I got so tired of telling you numbers and dangers of our crew and I am sure you did also. So, I just went back through the many pictures taken over the years and picked only the ones of joy, thanksgiving and good memories of helping the Haitians through your generous donations and prayers.
Sincerely,
Chuck and the Board of Directors
